How long does a gel manicure last — and what actually affects it?
Gel polish can last two to four weeks, sometimes longer. But a lot depends on how you prepare, the products used, and what you do after you leave the studio.
The honest answer: two to four weeks, usually
Most gel manicures last between two and four weeks before you start noticing lifting at the edges or visible regrowth. That range is wide because several factors are genuinely variable — and most of them are outside the studio's control once you leave.
The base layer adhesion is set when the job is done. After that, it comes down to your nails and your habits.
What makes it last longer
Clean, dry nails at the time of application. Proper dehydration before the base coat goes on. A well-trained technician who does not rush the curing stages. These are the things that matter at the studio end.
On your end: avoid prolonged soaking (long baths, swimming pools), use gloves for cleaning and washing up, and moisturise your cuticles. Dry, brittle nails tend to chip and lift earlier than well-hydrated ones. That part is unglamorous but genuinely useful.
What shortens it
Picking at the polish. Peeling it off. Opening cans or packages with the tips of your nails. Frequent exposure to harsh detergents without gloves. These are the most common reasons gel lifts earlier than it should — not the product, not the studio.
Oil-based products applied directly to the polish can also reduce adhesion over time. Cuticle oils are fine; most hand creams are fine. The issue is usually nail-specific treatments applied underneath the free edge.
When to come back
Most clients at LacquerLove come back every three to four weeks. At that point, regrowth is visible and the gel is starting to thin at the tips. If you want to keep extensions or a very specific length, you might come back sooner.
For removal: do not peel. Soaking in acetone or professional removal is the right approach. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it, which makes the next application less durable.
A note on products
We use professional-grade gel polishes at LacquerLove. We do not claim they are medical-grade or dermatologist-approved — they are cosmetic products, which is what they are. The quality does make a difference to longevity, but even the best products are affected by how they are cared for.
