Nail extensions: gel vs acrylic, shapes, maintenance and what to expect
Extensions are not as complicated as they sound, but there are decisions to make before you book. This guide covers the main differences, shapes, fills, and what the process looks like at LacquerLove.
Gel vs acrylic: the short version
Both gel and acrylic extensions add length and structure to your natural nail using different materials and application techniques.
Gel extensions tend to look more natural, are lighter, and flex slightly — which some people find more comfortable. They are applied with UV-cured gel and a nail form or tip.
Acrylic extensions are more rigid, slightly harder, and often used when significant length is needed. They are applied as a powder and liquid mixture and air-dry. Neither is inherently better — it depends on what you want the nails to do and how your natural nails respond.
Shapes
The most common shapes are: square, round, oval, almond, and coffin (ballerina). Square is the most durable for everyday use. Almond and coffin are longer and more tapered — they look striking but are more likely to catch on things. Oval is a softer in-between.
We will discuss shape with you before starting. If you have a strong preference, mention it when booking so we can allocate the right amount of time.
How long extensions last and what fills involve
Extensions last two to four weeks before regrowth at the base becomes visible and the balance of the nail changes. At that point, a fill appointment is needed — this involves filing back the grown-out area and applying fresh material, rather than removing and redoing the full set.
Full removal should be done professionally. Soaking in acetone is the standard approach. Pulling or forcing the extensions off damages the natural nail significantly.
Things to know before booking
Extensions add length and structure, but they also add weight. If you have never had extensions before, starting with a moderate length is usually sensible — very long nails take some getting used to, and the chance of breaking one within the first week is higher if you are not accustomed to them.
Nail extension appointments at LacquerLove are handled by Lucas Dubois, our Nail Extension Technician. Appointments start from €70. Fills are priced separately — contact us for current fill pricing.
