What to do after a pedicure to keep it looking good longer
A pedicure does not require complex aftercare. But a few small habits make a noticeable difference to how long it lasts — especially if you had gel polish applied.
The first few hours
If you had standard nail polish (not gel), avoid tight shoes or socks for at least two hours. Polish takes longer to fully set than it looks. A smudge from shoes within the first hour is the most common cause of an otherwise good pedicure looking damaged before it has started.
For gel pedicures, you can put shoes on immediately after leaving — gel is cured under UV and is fully hardened before you go. Just avoid anything very tight that presses directly on the toes.
Moisturise — but not the polish
Dry skin around the toes and heels comes back quickly if you do not stay on top of it. A regular foot moisturiser applied to the skin (not the nail surface) extends the result significantly. This is especially true if you spend a lot of time in sandals or barefoot on hard floors.
Cuticle oil around the base of the nail is fine and actually helps. Avoid putting rich oil-based creams directly on the surface of gel polish for the first day or so — it can dull the finish slightly.
What to avoid
Long hot baths and swimming pools soften the nail plate and can lift gel from the edges. This is more of an issue for hands than feet, but it is still worth noting. Heavy physical activity on the day of the appointment — running, hiking in tight boots — can cause minor chipping before the gel has had time to fully settle.
Do not peel the polish off. It takes part of the natural nail with it, which makes the next application less durable and can make nails feel thinner and rougher over time.
When to come back
For a classic pedicure: every four to six weeks is typical, depending on how quickly your nails grow and how much foot care you do at home. For a gel pedicure, three to four weeks is common before regrowth becomes visible.
